I Am Legend and Other Stories by Richard Matheson
I Am Legend and Other Stories by Richard Matheson

Some of this book was quite emotional and although at some points I just wanted to shake the main character, I can understand why he thought the way he did. I find that there were a few similarities between the film and the book such as Robert Neville’s love of music and watching films to distract himself, but the storylines and the vampires were completely different. The first few chapters get you intrigued with mysteries about who different people the protagonist mentions could be and this mystery really made me want to keep reading to find out who they were, or if it would even be revealed. The short chapters really make this a fast-paced read, especially with all the action that takes place in the novel. The take on vampires seems quite realistic and although some stereotypes are apparent, they seem believable because there is reasoning given in the book. I really like the insight into the thought process of someone who is going through an apocalypse-type scenario. The monotony of Robert Neville’s life comes across well and yet it is still interesting to read about because you, as a reader, haven’t experienced this so it really draws you into the world. The beginning completely drew me into this book straight away. I saw the film starring Will Smith years ago and loved it but I always avoided the book because I heard that it was completely different to the film, but with it being one of the book club choices and since I own it after purchasing it as part of the Gollancz 50 Sci Fi/Fantasy favourites collection earlier in the year, I thought I’d pick it up. I am part of the Jolly Good Reading Society on Goodreads and one of the 4 choices for this month’s Book Club was ‘I Am Legend’ by Richard Matheson. The novel was adapted to film in 1964 as The Last Man on Earth, in 1971 as Omega Man, and in 2007 as I am Legend, starring Will Smith. In 2012, it was named the best vampire novel of the century by the Horror Writers Association and the Bram Stoker Estate. Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend has been a major influence on horror literature. But the more he discovers about the vampires around him, the more he sees the unsettling truth of who is-and who is not-a monster. He must now struggle to make sense of what happened and learn to protect himself against the vampires who hunt him nightly.Īs months of scavenging and hiding turn to years marked by depression and alcoholism, Robert spends his days hunting his tormentors and researching the cause of their affliction. The population of the entire world has been obliterated by a pandemic of vampire bacteria. Winner of the Bram Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award for best vampire novel of the century: the genre-defining classic of horror sci-fi that inspired three films.
